Because a girl can never have too many pretty lip colours, right?
So I parted with my entire collection of more than 50 lipsticks when I decided to switch to natural beauty alternatives from head to toes over twelve months ago. To be honest, I’d be lying if I tell you that it wasn’t difficult to start with. But it was one of the best discovery journey I’ve embarked on, as I’ve pretty much overhauled my lipstick wardrobe to only natural and vegan ones that look as beautiful as those toxin-laden tubes I used to ingest (like, a LOT).
For my fellow green beauty bunnies, you’ll be glad to know that choices of lipsticks that are vegan-friendly and naturally formulated aren’t limited at all. Here’s a range from an Australian brand that I’ve recently come across – would love to share my thoughts on their natural & vegan lipsticks while also giving YOU the chance to test it out – follow along!

Why are they Green?
♥ Made from all naturally derived pigments and plant-based ingredients
♥ Colours are derived naturally from beetroot, berry, clay and citrus instead of the little critters beetles and bees!
♥ Both lipsticks and lip balms contain natural edible oils including coconut oil, shea butter and almond oil.
♥ Formulated WITHOUT petroleum oils, mineral oils or parabens that are common toxins found in conventional lipsticks. Those are all potentially harmful ingredients that are suspected endocrine disruptors and carcinogens (read more about these toxic ingredients in cosmetics products here).
♥ Test on fellow hippies, not animals!
♥ Boxes and lipstick caps are made from recycled cardboard which is beautiful and eco-friendly.
♠ Let’s start with my first impression! All three shades look oh-so-gorgeous and seem very wearable for any occasions. The one I fell for at first sight was Tangerine Dream – I pretty much knew for sure any lip colours in light orange and peachy hues work well for my skin tone. In fact, I’ve never ever come across any citrusy shades that I dislike (apart from those 80s fluoro colours). The other two shades look earthy and natural, I was very keen to take them out to road-test!
Here’re the swatches:
♠ So I took them out to play and we had a dark horse here! Tangerine Dream didn’t disappoint – I love its coral undertone with very subtle gold shimmer that gives my face an instant healthy glow. This shade goes so well with a bronze sunkissed makeup look, while it also looks good sans bronzer on my face on days when I wear little makeup.
♠ Berry Smoothie looks like a light mauve shade on the back of my hand while it looks a bit too pale on my pout – don’t think this is the best shade for my skin tone. I could make it work by pairing it with shimmery smokey eyes in purple shades, and balance the look with this neutral lip colour. These days I don’t wear smokey eyes often enough though so I don’t see myself using this a lot.
♠ The winner? Ta-dah – j’adore In The Nuddie! It didn’t impress me too much when I unboxed it as it looks a tiny bit dark and chocolate-like (the dark lip colours I wear are mostly burgundy and dark berries shades). Once applied, it actually looks a lot lighter and very natural on my skin tone – I’d happily declare it as my perfect nude shade! This is really exciting stuff as finding a nude shade that pops is even trickier than finding the perfect red lipstick. You have NO idea how long I’ve been on the hunt for a nude lipstick that’s vegan-friendly and ticks all my green beauty boxes! Just because nude lipsticks are girls’ BFFs – they’re surely one of the most versatile pieces in any makeup kits, and are forever chic and classy. I almost wanted to purchase a stack of them and keep them safe in my makeup cabinets in case they’re sold out soon!
Now tell me lovelies, do you agree this is the prettiest shade on me?
♠ Both In The Nuddie and Berry Smoothie come with a matte finish while Tangerine Dream is very sightly shimmery.
♠ The texture of these natural & vegan lipsticks are pretty solid, they aren’t quite buttery. Its consistency is almost like crayon when you apply it on your lips. I usually apply a thin layer of lip balm underneath to help them glide on smoothly.
♠ I wear it on work days for long hours in an air-conditioned room and they feel soothing on my lips. The layer of lip balm I apply as a base likely helps a bit to lock in the moisture and prevent dry lines.
♠ In terms of staying power, I’d rate them as medium. They last for good 3 to 4 hours without fading (no eating but only sips of water in between). To be honest, I haven’t found any natural & vegan lipsticks that can stay put for like 12 hours and won’t wear off after meals. Although these are the little things that I’d happily compromise if it means no toxins in my lipsticks (that most likely end up on my Martini glass).
♠ TIPS: It’s recommended that you exfoliate your lips before application to make them stay longer. Why not make a natural lip scrub by mixing coconut oil and sugar? It’s nourishing and delicious at the same time!
♠ With their vegan lip blams, my favourite is the Pomegrante one whcih is slightly tinted. The shade looks like berry but once applied it’s just a very light pop of red. It’s wonderful for wearing on days when I run errands without makeup, yet still want to hint of glow on my face.
♠ Not to mention that these natural lip balms instantly soften my lips like butter on hotcakes – LOVE!
♠ It also tastes deliciously fruity but its sweetness is nothing overpowering. Upon digging into the ingredient list, these lip balms are in fact sweetened with Stevia which is a kind of plant-based natural sweetener – vegans here will probably be familiar with Stevia as it’s quite commonly used as a substitute for sugar in cooking i.e they’re totally edible. At $5.50 per five gram-tube, it’s a steal buy considering that its ingredients used are all food-grade. I’ll most likely repurchase.
