So this is not exactly Copacabana in Brazil (it’s on the bucket list!). It’s my beautiful coastal ‘backyard’ here in South East Queensland on the Surfers Paradise beach in Gold Coast Australia.
And this isn’t exactly how Surfers Paradise beach looks like for the rest of the (nearly) 364 days of the year either. As some of you Northerners who live on the other side of the globe might have heard, we’re a bunch of lucky bunnies who bask in plenty of golden sunshine for most days of the year. It just happened that I’ve planned for a lookbook shoot on the beach, and the thick clouds with thunderstorm were just rolling in – you can thoroughly plan everything else but the weather right?!
Yet the best spark tends to light up at the moments when you least expect it.
It was totally love at first sight with this ‘Copacabana’ rainbow stripes scarf when I saw it at Gail Sorronda store in Brisbane. Gail Reid, who’s the whiz kid behind her internationally acclaimed fashion label Gail Sorronda, has caught my eyes with her ‘dark romantic’ aesthetic every since I interviewed her as a guest blogger for the local Ekka Natural Fibre Fashion Parade in 2013 (read my interview with Gail here & here).
The Copacabana line was part of Gails’s Autumn Winter 2013 ‘Lighthouse‘ offering. The vibe is distinctly light and jovial at the first glance, with ruffles in a playful colour palette – black and white contrasted with blood orange and royal blue. The chemistry was kind of like a ‘sailor-meets-flamenco-dancer’ kind of vibe which is adorably fun and full of characters!
Being inspired by typical Gail Sorronda’s aesthetic of dark romanticism, my mood board was mainly to set up dramatic contrasts with the jovial vibe from the vibrant colour palette and a plain sheer black dress. And mother nature has set up the perfect backdrop for these visuals with a mysterious layer of storm clouds brewing over the horizon. So there you have it – playful rainbow colour patettes scarf with a pair of monochrome black and white stripes sunglasses, white sandy beach with ominous dark clouds descending. Oh, and did I mention we’ve got some not-so-friendly visitors – blue jellyfish in alien-like shapes being washed to the shore. They were totally fascinating to watch! So tell me lovelies, how would you rate this lookbook?
