Woot! It’s only three weeks until Christmas, who else has been thinking if you’ve been naughty or nice this year? In terms of my skincare and beauty routine, I certainly hope I’ve made it to Santa’s nice list for being committed to only use the most natural, non-toxic products for my skin and body. How about you, my fellow lovelies? Have you taken a moment to reflect on your skincare routine this year? Have you shown some ‘green love’ to your body and the environment by saying no to chemicals-laden skincare brands?
Over the weekend I did some further reading on myths and facts about cosmetic products and here’s one thing worth sharing with you all:
Myth: Consumers can read ingredient labels and avoid products with hazardous chemicals.
Fact: Federal law in U.S. allows companies to leave many chemicals off labels, including nanomaterials, contaminants, and components of fragrance. Fragrance may include any of 3,163 different chemicals, none of which are required to be listed on labels. Fragrance tests reveal an average of 14 hidden compounds per formulation (source here).
So it seems that checking ingredient labels might not be as bullet-proof as it sounds. What are the other great ways to ensure you’re only treating your skin with the purest? I heard you just asked. Do not panic, my dear, our monthly non-toxic skincare reviews feature is here to rescue! Here at Lace n Ruffles, I believe the all important ‘smell test’ can be as reliable as checking the ingredient labels. This is especially true when I’ve switched to natural products for a few months now and I feel my sense of smell has definitely become more acute than before. And we all know that checking reviews online before buying is for any savvy consumer, right? Here we present four natural skincare brands we’ve recently road-tested to help you make some informed choices to green your beauty cabinets.
♥ Mukti Organics
Products tested: Age Defiance Range – Day Serum, Night Serum and Eye Serum. Combination/ Oily Range – Foaming Cleanser, Mist Toner, Balancing Moisturiser and Clarity Balm.
Why is it green: 100% certified organic botanical base. Supported by scientific evidence and documentation. Bioactive – cold formulated to maintain the integrity of the ingredients. Native Australian extracts with skin regenerating properties and potent vitamins C and E. 100% disclosure of every ingredient. Formulated in potent therapeutic quantities to achieve visible results. No petrochemicals and other non organic products of animal origin. Vegan and palm oil free.
Verdict: First impression – I was totally captivated by the shimmering violet glass bottles that the products came in. It’s called MIRON glass that uses Biophotonic technology to maintain and preserve the skincare formulations over an extended period of time which is very important for certified organic products. Apart from being aesthetically pleasing these glass bottles are also recyclable – TICK!
First up for trial was their Age Defiance Range – I haven’t really come across any favourite products that are labelled as age-defying partly because most of those I trialed were way too greasy and thick. I have combination/ oily skin so the idea of layering my skin with layers of grease aren’t that exciting. Mukti Age Defiance Range was the first that has impressed me! The three types of serums are extremely fast-absorbing, leaving my skin feeling soft without any greasy residue. They are in beautiful amber-yellowish shade, with perfect texture that isn’t too thin or too thick making massaging evenly onto the skin fairly easy. Day serum is light and feels like an invisible veil to wear underneath my mineral makeup all day. Their day and night serum also give a very subtle glow on my face. Next was the smell next – so many tick, tick and tick! It was almost like walking through a lush bush after rain when applying their eye serum – very reinvigorating. Both day and night serum smell like botanicala (of course) while also carrying a subtly sweet floral scent.
I then explored their Combination/ Oily range. Let’s start with the cleanser – again it passed the smell test with a very exotic leafy sort of fragrance that isn’t too overpowering. It comes with a clear consistency and a lightly foaming formula. The morning wash felt gentle and refreshing while restoring moisture balance on my skin. It was then followed by a spray of the Neroli Blossom Toner, which delivers a very fine mist of uplifting citrus burst – LOVE! Skin felt nourished and supple which is another tick. Then I applied a generous pump of their Balancing Moisturiser. I’d highly recommend it for combination skin type as it doesn’t create oily complexion and the subtle fragrance of sweet plum sticks around magically. Last from their range I trialed was their Clarity Blam. It targets acneic prone skin to remove excessive oil. It comes with a clear and lightweight formula. Luckily, I don’t currently suffer from any acne outbreak but I used it as part of my post workout beauty routine and it seems to calm my redness fairly well. It doesn’t feel you’ve put on an extra layer of balm on your face as it simply absorbs fully leaving no traces of grease or whatsoever but just a berry-licious scent! It’s the latest product added to my post workout beauty pouch.
What more to love is that Mukti has put together a comprehensive glossary list of all ingredients you can find in their products – now I can confidently tell my BFFs why I love their products while sounding like a herbal specialist! They also allow you to buy samples for certain products before purchasing any full-sized item which is very thoughtful.
♥ A Bit Hippy
Products tested: Natural Mineral Creme Deodorant, Soothing Moisturiser, Scalp Loving Shampoo and Scalp Loving Conditioner.
Why is it green: Deodorant is aluminium free and is formulated with Milk of Magnesia instead, with added citrus oil and rosewood oil. Shampoo carries no SLS and only contains natural ingredients such as aloe vera leaf juice, coconut and glucose based cleanser. Conditioner is formulated with jojoba oil but not silicone oil which is used to lubricate bike chains (yuk!) and added to most conditioner formula. (Note: silicone oil also coats the scalp that leads to itchiness.) Tested on fellow hippies but not animals.
Verdict: I wasn’t aware of the potential health hazard of aluminium compounds in most antiperspirant formula till the lady from A Bit Hippy has pointed out to me so I felt eternally grateful! Aluminum compounds in antiperspirant have been associated with breast cancer in some studies and reported to carry hormonal effects as they’re applied to an area next to the breast (further reading here). Isn’t that terrifying enough? This non-toxic alternative is based on a magnesium formula which is needed in our bodies. The consistency is milky and quite thick. The roll-on tube makes applying an even layer fairly easy. I’d recommend waiting for around 30 seconds for it to dry before putting on dark coloured clothing to avoid deodorant patches from underarms. I’ve trialed numerous antiperspirant and not all of them worked for me. This one is a winner! I apply in the morning after shower, and re-apply after yoga. So far there’s been no complaint from my desk buddy so I assume I smell fresh!
Their body moisturiser smells like honey and licorice – delicious! I wore it overnight and it was quite powerfully nourishing with long-lasting effect – I woke up the next morning with supple, soft skin – happy days! I’m a bit of a lotion junkie with bottles in my kitchen, bedroom and bathroom and this one has proudly made it to my favourite list.
Their Scalp Loving Shampoo has a clear consistency and a subtle honey scent. It doesn’t have the greasy feel that some conditioning type of shampoos have. Their conditioner is really lightweight and easy to massage evenly onto my hair. I have very fine hair plus my hair is rather long. My hair has a tendency to get extremely tangled, and is usually hard to manag. I find that after using A Bit Hippy shampoo and conditioner, my hair is much easier to care for and it seems to stay that way longer between shampoos. I’m not fighting the tangles anymore and my hair has a smoother look to it – go hippies!

Products tested: Scentrelle Body Dew Moisturising Oil (for dry skin)
Why is it green: Full of hydrating oils and natural ingredients such as Rosemary, Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Apricot Kernel, Watermelon and Basil. Designed to help moisture, fight ageing and improve skin elasticity. There is some ‘parfum’ meaning it’s not entirely natural.
Verdict: Packaged in a simple yet attractive bottle, the moisturising oil smells deliciously of watermelon, evoking a sense of summer and freshness. I followed the instructions and applied it fairly liberally, although when it comes to oil, you only need to pump out a little to make it go the mile. Immediately, my skin felt moisturised and soft. The scent was massaged into the skin, and hours later, I could still smell the watermelon on my arms! Yum! Ideal for making you feel a little extra special, as well as providing a boost of moisture, this is a keeper.

Products tested: Soothe Bath Soak
Why is it green: Made from natural ingredients (Oat milk produced from Australian certified organic oats and organic French Lavender oil).
Verdict: As someone who suffers from eczema flare-ups from time to time, I’m always a little nervous trying a new skin care product. However, I need not have worried, as Soothe Bath & Skin is designed to aid sensitive and dry skin! This dynamic, multi-purpose product can be used in the bath, shower and as a face cleanser.
After a stressful end to the working week, I prepared a bath and added 2 scoops of the powder to the water. When I opened the sachet, the smell of lavender was overwhelmingly beautiful. Sitting in the bath was relaxing, but the scent didn’t quite soak into my skin.
To use it on my face, the next day I poured a little powder into my hand, added water and made a paste. Again, the lavender smell was amazing! As a sucker for facials, I loved smearing the oat milk paste over my face, before rinsing it off with warm water. My skin did feel softer but again, the scent didn’t stick around.
If you need a gentle cleanser for your body and face and love the relaxing fragrance of lavender, then definitely try Soothe Bath & Skin.

Disclaimer: I was gifted by the brands mentioned in this post while all opinions are genuinely my own. I can’t guarantee that all products I recommend will suit you. I only use products I personally think are good having tried them on myself while everyone’s skin is different and it’s possible to be allergic to anything. Wherever possible, test products out on yourself before purchasing. I always trial products such as moisturiser and serum for at least 7 days before reviewing, while some other products like face wash and makeup might only be trialed once.
